Have Yourself Some Very Merry Problem Gaming

Original Image (C) SEGA

Should that be, "2011"? I'll figure it out by 2012.

And a Happy 2011 to you, too! I’ll see you there, controller in hand, and videos in tow. HO HO HO!

What games are you scoring this year? I’ll be getting Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. Since my brain is pretty saturated and partially-cooked after the first two games, I probably won’t start this one for a while. Other games I’m interested in are Last Window: The Secret of Cape West, the conveniently Europe-only sequel to Hotel Dusk: Room 215 , and the Lunar: The Silver Star remake on PSP.

Got any New Year’s resolutions made? As for me, I hereby resolve to get the remaining 3 chaos emeralds in Sonic 4. And to chill out about life in general :)

On a side note, ’tis the season, and I got some funds! So I think I’ll finally renew the blog’s CSS upgrade and the domain name. :D

PGRemix: “Born Under a Shooting Star” (Ristar)

From the Genesis classic Ristar, “Ring Rink” (Stage 5-1). Original Composer: Tomoko Sasaki. I adore the original song, so I couldn’t think of a much better candidate for my very first complete remix ever.

I know it’s a little shaky in spots, and I won’t be submitting it to OCRemix — it’s way too short, for one thing — but I enjoyed making it, and I like the sound.
And no, I just can’t stay away from the oboe and bassoon. =D

Hi peoples

I have been off in wonderful Idaho for the past month, with wonderful Ben. Hooray! Unfortunately I had to come home for an impertinent test — on a Saturday afternoon, no less. Can’t beat a whole month away from home with your sweetie pie, though… unless it was two months.

Of course, there was no shortage of gaming during this time. We played a crapload of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (X360), which is far and away the best Genesis compilation money can buy. Eccos! Streets of Rage 1-3! Phantasy Star 4! Sonic x 4! The only conceivable ways they could improve on it for a future release would be to:

1) ditch Super Thunder Blade for After Burner or Space Harrier 2… or anything, for the love of god, just do away with that piece of prehistory,

2) reinstate Shadow Dancer and remove E-Swat (seriously, when did that become better than a Shinobi game?),

3) get the license or whatever rights they need for Toe Jam & Earl 2, and

4) stop trying to capitalize on Gunstar Heroes by releasing it separately for 10 bucks a pop.

Then we would behold perfection.

The emulation on Xbox360 is solid, with what minor errors there are mostly affecting that funky Genesis sound chip, which shouldn’t be noticeable to any but the most devout Genesis zealots. Thinking back to the PS2 predecessor, Sega Genesis Collection, which has mostly the same games (and, I suspect, code), the emulation had a lot more holes — the single male scream for both genders in Golden Axe, for example. So yeah, not perfect, but pretty damn close.

What else? There was the co-op in Fable III, which provided hours of amusement, particularly when it came to spinning your character in place during long dialogue sequences. I made a red mage, and her coattails flared around like helicopter blades! …maybe I should pursue an ADD diagnosis. GTA: China Town Wars provided a pleasant distraction while I studied, and Sonic 4 had its hard-to-master iPhone features. Later on, I rediscovered Chibi Robo: Park Patrol… which, incidentally, is no less Machiavellian than Fable III.

It goes without saying that we had ourselves a grand olde tyme. We’re hoping to repeat it shortly. On the subject of Chibi Robo, though, I think that would make a fine topic for an upcoming episode…

Problem Gamer, ep. 8: “Zombies Ate the Gamers”! (part 2)

Looks like my CSS might endure a little longer! I don’t know how it’s happening, but I’m not about to ask ;)
Part 2 of the ZAMN episode is here! After part 1, where I sang ZAMN’s praises and showcased a few of its more enjoyable moments, it’s Mike’s turn to hit back with a few groin-grabbingly painful parts of the game. Maybe he’ll finally get even with me for putting him through this whole ordeal!

A little on the short side, maybe, but that should please my dad (whose opinion of the first was, “It’s a bit long”). =P
I trust you’ll find everything to be wrapped up semi-satisfactorily in this part :)

Blip.tv’s player also looks like it’s behaving again, so I might put my other stuff on there. At least I’ll be embedding from there from now on, as I sure could use me some ad revenue!

ZAMN Part 2 Coming Soon! And other news

It’s almost time for the next part–yes, already! If I can keep to this schedule, I might get it out before school starts on September 13th. Then, if the magic continues, there might actually be further episodes… an amazing possibility.

My CSS Upgrade is due to expire in 3 days, so things might suddenly revert back to a pretty basic appearance around here. I’m sorry about that, but it’s 15 dollars I just don’t have. I’m backing up the CSS so I’ll be able to punch it up again at a future date. This may even be the last update under this layout… *sniff*

Um… in other news, I am pretty tired! So good night!

Problem Gamer, Ep. 8: “ZAMN Be Damned”! (part 1)

I hope the VodPod version gets the 4:3 right. I’m confused as to why it’s a little out of proportion on YT and blip… it’s recognized as a 720×480 video, but maybe stuff’s just acting funny.

I know the hat is a *little* off from what it looks like in the game, but it was the closest we had. (And believe it or not: yes, I actually drink Bud. ) :D

Episode 8: “ZAMN be Damned” (pt.1) is here =D

A new video?!! Even I can barely believe it. If you’re reading this, thank you for the patience while I put this “should-I-call-it-my-comeback?” together. Although I know everyone ADORES Panzer Dragoon as much as I do [/sarcasm], it was high time to move on to a new game. Sorry Panzy — I’ll come back to you!

In this episode, I become a kind of problem-pusher for Zombies Ate My Neighbors, a game I’m rather fond of but that Mike, for various reasons, thoroughly despises. Being a relative novice, I want his help to play through the game, and I will stop at nothing to get it.

UPDATE: I thought the Blip.tv version was the best, so I embedded it in the next post; however, because it’s the master file (which was a 328 MB .wmv), I don’t really know if it’s good for people on slower connections (and using anything other than internet explorer) Blip updated their player, there are apparently all kinds of problems with embedded playback. I think they’re still working out the various and many bugs.

Part 2: Zombies Ate The ‘Gamers will be quick to follow! And I might actually mean that this time.

Still working

surrounded by hellspawn weeds

I'm not about to give up that easily... THIS time.

News to report! The ZAMN episode is well underway, and I’m honestly enjoying myself again. Doing things a little differently this time around has made the whole process much less of a pain in the arse. For instance, I’m taking all shots with the Kodak Zx1 in VGA (not HD), cause let’s face it: the game is OLD, and for old games, no one cares about widescreen presentation. I was just too busy thinking “I have an HD camera, wowow!” to realize this earlier.

The video doesn’t look as crisp, as you can imagine, but that’s a trade-off I’m willing to make. Tomorrow, there will be more progress, and perhaps, for the first time in recent history, a PG video release. (Although that might be the day after tomorrow.) :D

Here’s a departure: Announcing Episode 8, “ZAMN be Damned”

In this episode, I’m going to take a break from whatever it is I’m doing to play everyone’s favorite top-down scream-fest, Zombies Ate My Neighbors! Problem Bro (that’s Mike) will again join me to take on a 16-bit juggernaut, and hopefully send it back to the grave.

Fitting neatly into the category of run n’ gun n’ die a ton, this 2-player classic is the true harbinger of the survival horror genre. Do not be fooled by its humorous visuals and comical soundtrack: they will not comfort you through 48 mazes of death, the very bowels of insanity that snake through this game.
Well, I’ll save the rest for the video. This is going to be fun :D

It’s been another long time

After my repeated and prolonged absences, I have concluded that this thing called “the internet” may indeed be here forever, and one can always come back to it. I’ve now tested this theory enough times that I might finally be able to close the book on it and not drop off the face of the worldwide web again. However, there is evidence that that might happen again, for some unknown reason, at some undetermined time. We’ll see!

I finally pestered WordPress enough that they dropped my domain and let me start making posts again. That only took me, what, 3 months? Oy.

So what’s new? I’ve met my Ben, ScrewAttack holy-man and boyfriend extraordinaire, in Idaho, and had him come here. All told, it was about 50 days we spent in each other’s company… which sounds like a lot, but it was still too short. We played copious amounts of games, of schools new and old, traveled a bit, and had a generally smashing time.

What with watching Ben go through Skies of Arcadia Legends and logging an extra 20 hours on it myself, I’ve been on an RPG kick lately. Strategy, too, what with painstakingly bashing Advance Wars: Days of Ruin into tiny little pieces, and seeing Valkyria Chronicles again. So I think I’ll start on Panzer Dragoon Saga and an accompanying video, for anyone still interested. Between vague attempts at trying to decide my future, looking for a job, learning how to drive, and sitting on my duff, I really do need something to occupy my time.

For now, I think I’ll take a walk.
